Traditionally, an award will also be presented for Bulgaria's top athlete with disabilities. Special awards will also be given on behalf of sports journalists as a sign of respect for deserving Bulgarian athletes.
The first official survey was conducted in 1958. In the poll organized by "Naroden Sport," basketball player Vanya Voynova won - the first official winner of "Athlete of the Year." The record holder for winning the most prestigious award is Stefka Kostadinova - 4 times. Boyan Radev and Stanka Zlateva have been chosen as #1 3 times each. Eight great Bulgarian athletes have triumphed twice - Prodan Gardjev, Petar Kirov, Hristo Markov, Serafim Todorov, Yordan Yovchev, Rumyana Neykova, Grigor Dimitrov, and Aleksandar Vezenkov.
