Bulgaria's head coach Gianlorenzo Blengini was pleased with the character his team showed in the victory over Argentina. The Italian specialist emphasized that the team was prepared for a tough battle and managed to maintain concentration in the key moments of the match.
- Mr. Blengini, did you have to struggle more than expected in this match?
- Yes, but we expected that. We knew it would be a difficult match. We were prepared for such a scenario because we know Argentina and its players. They are fighters and after two losses, they certainly wouldn't give up. From the very beginning, we expected a long and contested encounter.
- What did the Argentinians make most difficult for you?
- In the first set, they received very well, even against our toughest serves. However, we continued to believe in our game and follow our plan. It was clear that we would have to fight for every point.
- After winning the second set, did you feel that control was in your hands?
- No. After 25:23, we knew it would be a point-for-point battle. We continued to look for an extra point from a block, another saved ball in defense, a little more advantage from the serve. That's how we managed to stay ahead.
- The third set seemed easier for your team.
- Yes, we had some advantage there and the game was smoother for us. But we expected the fourth set to be difficult again. We fell behind in the score, but we didn't change our attitude. This is precisely what is important in such tournaments.
- Was that the only key to victory?
- The serve was an important element. We also showed good things in attack. Today we weren't as effective through the middle as in other matches, but we found solutions on the wings. Volleyball is a game of adaptation. You have to find solutions when something doesn't go according to plan, and never give up. This is the quality that distinguishes high-level teams.
- What do you expect from the next match?
- Another serious challenge. We need to take a step forward in our development. Last year we had difficulties in three consecutive matches, and this is a good opportunity to show growth. We will face a young team that also has experienced players, defends excellently, and receives very well.
