Argentina dropped to 11th place in the world rankings after a second consecutive loss in the Volleyball Nations League. Following their defeat in their first match against Serbia, this time the "gauchos" succumbed to Iran with a decisive 0:3 (23:25, 19:25, 23:25) in a match from the first week of the tournament in Brazil.
The Iranians came out highly motivated after their heavy 0:3 defeat to Bulgaria a day earlier. Roberto Piazza's proteges showed a completely different face and deservedly achieved their first success in the VNL 2026.
Iran dominated mainly in attack, where they scored 46 points against 33 for Argentina. The Asian team was also more effective from the serve with 6 aces against 4, and also won more points after long rallies, recording 53 saved balls in defense against 39 for their opponent.
It is interesting that Argentina had a significant advantage in blocking – 10 block points against 4 for Iran, but this proved insufficient to compensate for the difference in attack. The Iranians were better organized in game distribution, which is also evident from the successful reception indicator – 92 against 74.
Individually, Iran's opposite Hoji was above all, finishing with 22 points, 17 of which were from attack. Poriya also performed strongly with 19 points (9 from attack). For Argentina, Diaz was the top scorer with 12 points, and Gomez added another 11.
Ultimately, Iran finished the match with 75 points won against 65 for Argentina, which accurately reflects the "Persians'" superiority across the three sets despite the relatively close score.
The victory is Iran's first in this year's edition of the Nations League and comes as an excellent response after the disappointing start against Bulgaria. For Argentina, the defeat is their second in a row and led to a retreat to 11th position in the world rankings, which further increases the pressure on the South American team early in the tournament. Today, the "gauchos" face Bulgaria.
