Iran showed its teeth against Brazil, but took only one set before the match with Bulgaria

Brazil. The Iranian national team began its participation in the Volleyball Nations League with a 1:3 (21:25, 25:23, 15:25, 23:25) defeat against Brazil in a match from the first week in Brazil.
Despite the loss, the Iranians made a good impression against the third-ranked team in the world. Roberto Piazza's team managed to win the second set and was completely even with the hosts in two other sets.

Brazil decided the match with blocks

Statistics show that blocking made the big difference in the match. The Brazilians scored 11 direct points from blocks against only 4 for Iran. Attack was almost even – 51 to 48 points in favor of "Seleção", and the hosts also had an advantage from serves – 6 aces against 3.

Category Brazil Iran
Attack 51 48
Block 11 4
Serve 6 3
Points from opponent's errors 30 29
Total points 98 84

The 7-point difference in blocking practically compensated for the almost even play in attack. Iran showed that they can create problems for leading teams, but they face difficulties against physically powerful teams at the net.

The Persians impressed in defense and reception

It is interesting that Iran surpassed Brazil in several key elements. The Asians recorded more digs in defense (54 against 53), better reception (78 against 64), and higher efficiency in setting (95 against 86).

Element Brazil Iran
Digs in defense 53 54
Reception 64 78
Distribution 86 95

The data shows that Iran was competitive in long rallies and in organizing their play. This is precisely what makes the team a dangerous opponent for Bulgaria, regardless of the final result against Brazil.

Haji led the scorers

Haji was the top scorer for Iran with 17 points. For Brazil, Darlan Souza finished with 18 points, and Ricardo Lucarelli added 14.

Team Player Points
Brazil Darlan Souza 18
Brazil Ricardo Lucarelli 14
Iran Haji 17
Iran Porya 14

Iran's main attacking burden fell on Haji, while Brazil had a more balanced distribution of points among its attackers.

Bulgaria is next

After the defeat, Iran remains 16th with 207.85 points in the world ranking, having lost 1.17 points from their total. The Persians' next opponent is Bulgaria.
The match between Bulgaria and Iran is today at 4:30 PM local time (10:30 PM Bulgarian time).
Judging by what they showed against Brazil, the Iranians will not be an easy opponent. They proved that they can stand up to a team from the world elite and will certainly be looking for their first victory against Bulgaria in this year's VNL competition. We recall that it was Iran who defeated us in the last group stage match of the 2025 Volleyball Nations League in Gdansk, thus depriving us of participation in the finals of the competition in China.
