The Bulgarian Volleyball Federation and the management of the National Volleyball Demax+ League discussed with the clubs the changes in the women's championship, which will come into effect from the 2026/2027 season.
12 teams will participate in the new championship, and the main goal of the reform is to increase competition and to have more evenly matched contests throughout the season.
The new format foresees three separate phases. In the first, all teams will play each other once. After that, the standings will divide the teams into two groups of six a first and a second.
In the second phase, teams will meet again only within their respective groups, playing home and away. The first six teams from the upper group of six will qualify directly for the playoffs, and the first two teams from the second group of six will join them.
The quarterfinals will be in a "best of three" format, while the semifinals and finals will be played in a "best of five" format.
There are also changes regarding relegation. The last team in the final standings will directly leave the elite division, and the 11th-placed team will play a relegation playoff against the second-placed team in the Higher League.
The Bulgarian Volleyball Federation also reported significant development in the women's sector in recent years. Besides the Demax+ Super League, for the second consecutive season there will also be a Higher League, and interest in participation continues to grow.
In the new season, Spartak, Etropole, Bdin Vida, Lavski Sartsa (Lion Hearts), Hebar 24, Troyan Volley, and Razlog will play in the Higher League, with the latter two clubs making their debut at this level.
According to the federation's management, the new format will be carefully analyzed, and the main focus remains on improving the quality of the championship and the development of the clubs.
