Daniele Torino took over Maritsa: I want us to build character and a strong tactical team

The champion of Bulgaria, Maritsa (Plovdiv), officially announced the appointment of Italian specialist Daniele Turino as the new head coach of the women's team. The coach has already signed his contract and started work at the helm of the Yellow-Blues for the 2026/2027 season.
Turino arrives in Plovdiv with rich international experience, gained in both club and national volleyball. In Italy, he has worked with the teams of Piemonte, Asti Volley, Chieri Volley, Bergamo Volley, and Legnano. Additionally, he was an assistant coach for the Slovenian national team.
Last season, the specialist was part of Marcello Abbondanza's staff at Fenerbahçe, and the two will continue their collaboration in the Bulgarian women's national team.
Speaking to Maritsa's club media, Daniele Turino admitted that the project of the Plovdiv club was the main reason for him to accept the offer.
"The club called me and presented their project. It includes a mix of young and experienced players. Maritsa is a big club in Bulgaria, and I want to work with these volleyball players," stated the Italian.
Turino emphasized that the development of young players is one of the strongest aspects of his career.
"In my career so far, I have worked with young players for 15 years in Italy, and I love doing that," added the coach.
The new head coach of the champions also praised the working conditions in Plovdiv.
"The conditions here are great. We have the Stroitel Hall for official matches, as well as a separate hall just for training, which allows us to prepare calmly with the team and my entire staff. This is a great opportunity for me," Turino added.
The Italian specialist also revealed what he will focus on in his work with the team.
"The main thing in volleyball for me is technique. I try to emphasize this component and to simultaneously build upon both technique and tactics in the team. My job will be to improve our team's tactical performance and to build the character of this team."

The appointment of Daniele Turino is another step in Maritsa's ambitious policy, which in recent years continues to hold a dominant role in women's volleyball in Bulgaria and to seek an increasingly significant presence in European club tournaments.
