Mattia Boninfante and Lube Civitanova have officially announced their parting ways, initiating the process to sign Bulgarian national Simeon Nikolov - one of the greatest talents in Bulgarian volleyball.
This was announced in a publication on Lube's club website.
Setter Mattia Boninfante, born in 2004, concludes his stay in Civitanova after two seasons filled with strong emotions, successes, and important finals. He was signed as part of the team's rejuvenation project and helped the team win the Italian Cup in the 2024/2025 season.
With Lube, the young playmaker also played in two consecutive Italian championship finals, as well as a Challenge Cup final in 2025. Last summer, Boninfante also received the prestigious "Gianfranco Badiali" award for best player under 23 in the Italian SuperLega for the 2024/2025 season.
"It would have been hard for me to imagine that I would be able to play for such a prestigious club at such a young age. I was part of matches and victories that I will remember forever. I gave my maximum every day
sometimes I managed to see the fruits of it, other times not. I understand and accept it because these things are part of sport and life," Boninfante stated in his farewell address.
He thanked everyone at the club for their help in his development as a person and an athlete.
An interesting detail is that Boninfante was spotted in the stands during the Russian Cup finals in Moscow, which further fueled speculation that his career might continue in the Russian championship.
Simeon Nikolov began his career at Levski, and currently plays for Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, where he works under the guidance of Plamen Konstantinov and assistant coach Andrey Zhekov. The Bulgarian national is considered one of the most promising young setters in world volleyball.
