Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie will play in the Champions League final for the second consecutive time, after defeating Ziraat Bank Ankara 3:1 (25:19, 24:26, 25:19, 25:19) in a spectacular semi-final in Turin. The Polish champions once again showed character in crucial moments and stopped the team of Tomasz Fornal and Nimir Abdel-Aziz on their way to the trophy.
The expectations for a fierce clash were met right from the first rallies. Zawiercie set the pace in the opening set thanks to Aaron Russell's strong performance, while Nimir Abdel-Aziz struggled to find his rhythm in attack. The Poles took a confident lead and closed the set 25:19.
The second set was the most dramatic of the match. The Turkish team started better, and Nimir began to make a difference from the service line. Warta, however, came back after a powerful run by Mateusz Bieniek and even reached set point at 24:23. It was then that Ziraat's Dutch opposite took the initiative and secured the victory 26:24.
After the equalizer, Michał Winiarski's men reacted excellently. Bieniek troubled the opponent's reception with his serve, and the Poles' block started to work better and better. Russell and Bartosz Kwolek were uncompromising in attack, and Zawiercie closed the third and fourth sets again with 25:19.
Aaron Russell was the top scorer for the winners with 16 points, Bartosz Kwolek added 13, and Mateusz Bieniek finished with 10 points and a series of key serves in crucial moments. For Ziraat, Nimir Abdel-Aziz scored 27 points, but lacked sufficient support.
Thus, the Champions League final will once again pit Sir Sicooma Monini Perugia against Aluron Warta Zawiercie. The Italian powerhouse, led by Kamil Semeniuk, earlier defeated Projekt Warszawa 3:0 (25:19, 25:20, 26:24).
